This happy bunch helps lead the music at the 10:30am service every Sunday. Rehearsals are held Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Sheppard Auditorium. Occasionally extra rehearsals help us to prepare for the Festival Seasons of the church year. On most Sunday mornings the Senior Choir sings an anthem in two, three or four parts. The choir sings music from many traditions and in many styles as we attempt to reflect the diversity of our local community and the wider church.
In most months throughout the school year some of the choir returns on Sunday afternoon to sing a traditional Anglican Evensong at 4pm, with rehearsal at 3pm. Several people who cannot make the time commitment to join the choir come out to sing at this service. Anyone else from area churches who appreciate singing a fairly traditional evensong service are welcome to join the Evensong choir—just let the Music Director know ahead of time (through the church office 905-372-3442) so that he can have music ready.
Membership in the choir is open to anyone who likes to sing. Reading music is certainly helpful, but not absolutely essential! Rehearsals always involve warm-ups and instruction for improving vocal technique. You do not have to phone ahead or audition—just appear a few minutes early on a Thursday evening so that a music packet can be put together for you.
The Junior Choir is open to children from the age of about 8 and up. At the moment we only have one group for all ages, but we will split into a younger and an older group when numbers permit. Every attempt is made to choose music that embraces the diverse range of ability in the children, from simple unison anthems to 2-part music and occasionally music with handbells or handchimes included. The Junior Choir sings an anthem at the beginning of the Children’s Focus at least once a month.
The Junior Choir meets on Thursday after school from 4:30 until about 5:15. Rehearsal is held either in the Sheppard Auditorium or in the Main Sanctuary. After 5:15 the younger members remain for instruction in music rudiments and sight-singing, building upon the basics learned in Sing & Ring.
Membership is open to any child who likes to sing and has begun to read (grade 2 or higher suggested).
For pre-schoolers to grade 1 (age 3 thru 7), an opportunity to be part of an enthusiastic group of young singers while learning to play age-appropriate hand chimes and learning the basics of music. Rehearsals are Thursdays from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in the Sanctuary. A light snack is served. Bring a friend along too. Sign up and first rehearsal Thursday, September 9th.
Each year outstanding choristers are awarded this scholarship in memory of Roger Brown, a member of the choirs at St. Peter's for fifty years. Monetary awards are directed toward lessons or further musical endeavours. Requirements for the scholarship can be obtained from the church office at 905-372-3442.
